At the time of Jesus' stay on the Earth some 2000 years ago the story of Dionysus and Osiris were well established but nobody seemed to notice the similarities between the 3 of them?? Tryout turned out to be the keyword, here. I have had Johnson's story collection (connected story collection, that is) Jesus' Son (1992) on my shelf for a long time. As he enters the gates, Jesus sees a procession leaving the town and carrying a dead man, the only son of a mother who is a widow. For whatever reason, despite others reading it and recommending it highly, I avoided it. It is also a story that continues the journey of Jesus whose purpose is to minister to the poor, the outcast and the “sinners”. He connects his story to larger universal stories and illustrates these stories with hundreds of edited film clips and projected Integrating hundreds of film clips and photographic images into a theatrical celebration of the Cinematic Savior, it's the tale of two epic heroes on a search for transcendence: Jesus, the Son of God -- Mike, the son of a TV writer. Jesus comes across a funeral procession, again a widow's only son. So this guy walks into a dark room. He sits down and for 70 minutes tells a story about his own life. JESUS' SON was recommended to me as the perfect tryout book for Johnson's literature. We see this same grace and love in the story from Luke. Jesus didn't go looking for it in order to be a hero.
